Heartbeat frequency ( publication period )

The spec says:

uint16 MAX_PUBLICATION_PERIOD = 1 # [second]
# The publication period shall not exceed this limit.

I would like to know which frequency is commonly used for the heartbeat please?
Is there a rule of thumb for setting the period?

I would say it is application dependent… How fast response time is needed to detect missing node?
